Hate It or Love It, But It’s Still the Internet Essay

What impact does the internet leave upon society and adolescents who use it? People believe spending time online is either beneficial or harmful to our young generation. Brent Staples, the author of the article â€Å"What Adolescents Miss When We Let Them Grow Up in Cyberspace†, believes the internet is a bad thing. On the other hand, Janna M. Smith, who wrote â€Å"Online but Not Antisocial†, disagrees and states the internet is a positive aspect for society. Although, the authors discuss the internet and its effects, both have different views and opinions on it. Teens that use the internet daily are believed to have bad social skills. When it comes to interacting with other people, adolescents have lost touch with real life conversations with†¦show more content†¦Staples raises concerns about internet use and how it causes people to be less connected with society, â€Å"But a growing body of research is showing that heavy use of the Net can actually isolate younger socially connected people who unwittingly allow time online to replace face-to-face interactions with their families and friends† (296). In other words, Staples agrees that the internet leaves people with nonexistent social skills. He believes people are not as connected socially now that we spend more time online. Maybe isolation is a good thing when you use the internet. It is beneficial to be in solitude according to Smith, â€Å"Part of the answer is that privacy and solitude are very attractive and often emotionally salubrious states† (334). This is true because people enjoy being left unobserved. Using the Net in privacy I better than being a room full of people who could see what you’re doing. People do like their privacy and actually enjoy left being alone. Another concern Staples brings up is how teens use the Net. Adults and teens share differences when surfing the Net. But when it comes to teens being online they have a different reason like becoming someone else, â€Å"Marcus is a child of the Net, where everyone has a pseudonym, telling a story makes it true, and adolescents create older, cooler, more socially powerful selves any time they wish† (297).
